Enter the hysterical world of a madman, a monster disguised as a master teacher. He has come to play with us.

The show begins with a whirlwind of thrust-and-parry, as he spreads throughout the audience like a big red virus. Daring us to impress him with beautiful movements and vocal exercises of our own. He commands, “Risk, and you are rewarded!” The audience finds itself changing seats, yelling, posing, singing—we are lured into participating, and the consequences of not participating feel delightfully dire.

He offers us a contract: the show is entirely in our hands. “If you’re daring of the heart, if you’re courageous enough to tell the truth, this show could get very interesting. But if you’re fearful, if you’re withheld, this show will end in your own self-inflicted disappointment.”

What happens next is unique every night.

This is a show that risks. It is that risk which sets Red Bastard apart from other shows. Some nights something miraculous happens: audience members have proposed marriage, quit their job to start their own business, reunited with estranged siblings, and ended abusive relation- ships. A 60-year-old man said “I love you” to his father for the first time in his life. And this was all in the theatre, in front of fellow audience members. One can only imagine what people have done in private.

In essence, Red Bastard is a metaphor for what used to be shamanic journeys. The audience is confronted with a monster who drags us to the upper worlds of ecstasy (laughter and dreams) and to the depths of the underworld (the cavernous fear between desire and action). No one leaves the theatre with-out having been moved, physically and emotionally.
