An Iliad is a modern-day retelling of Homer's classic poem, performed by a single actor. It is the Lucille Lortel Award-winning solo play by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare, performed in English.

The play revolves around a character called The Poet: an ancient teller of tales doomed to tell the story of the Trojan War until the day when human nature changes, when our addiction to rage comes to an end… a day that has yet to come, of course.

On this particular night, he finds himself transported to the here and now, in front of a contemporary audience. He becomes infected with rage, nearly lost in the very story he is telling, and tries to quit, but can't. The old gods won't let him out of his storytelling purgatory.

The Play is written by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare and based on Robert Fagles' translation of Homer's The Iliad. It premiered in New York in 2012, won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show, and has since been produced across the United States and internationally. This production opened in Frankfurt Germany, in October 2025, playing eight performances to an audience of 540.
